On October 13, 2018 at 7 p.m., the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will hold the Travel with the Victorians Gala chaired by Trustee and Rowayton resident Paul Veeder. The event will feature a black-tie dinner, silent and live auctions, a special presentation by award-winning author, historian, and journalist Tony Perrottet, the exhibit preview, The Artist’s View: Traveling the Merritt Parkway featuring new works by Cynthia Mullins, and the Mansion’s first National Legacy Award honoring Trustee Mimi Findlay, a resident of New Canaan, CT.

While studying history at the University of Sydney, Australia, Tony Perrottet regularly disappeared hitch-hiking through the Outback, sailing the coast of Sumatra or traveling through rural India. After graduating, he moved to South America to work as a “roving correspondent,” and covered the Shining Path war in Peru, drug running in Colombia and several military rebellions in Argentina. Now a resident of Manhattan’s East Village, he has continued to commute to Iceland, Tierra del Fuego, Beijing, Tasmania and Zanzibar, while contributing to national and international publications including Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, Esquire, Outside, Afar and London’s Sunday Times.

Perrottet is the author of six books — a collection of travel stories, Off the Deep End: Travels in Forgotten Frontiers; Pagan Holiday: On the Trail of Ancient Roman Tourists; The Naked Olympics: The True Story of the Greek Games; Napoleon’s Privates: 2500 Years of History Unzipped; The Sinner’s Grand Tour: A Journey Through the Historical Underbelly of Europe and Cuba Libre! Che, Fidel and the Improbable Revolution That Changed History, which will be published by Penguin Random House in December.

His travel stories have been translated into a dozen languages and widely anthologized, having been selected six times for the Best American Travel Writing series. He is also a regular television guest on the History Channel, where he has spoken about everything from the Crusades to the birth of disco.

The LMMM Board will honor Trustee and New Canaan, CT Resident Mimi Findlay for her preservation activities and unwavering support of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. Since 1966, when she was working as a volunteer for the Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk, Mimi Findlay has been a dynamic and critical force in the revitalization and restoration of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. She has shared her extraordinary knowledge serving the Museum in many roles with distinction including Board President, Trustee Emeritus, Restoration Advisor, and Curatorial Chair, to name a few.

Her dedication and outstanding contributions to historic preservation and the arts have been recognized regionally and nationally, garnering numerous prestigious awards including, “The Dora Brahms Award” from the Education Foundation of the American Society of Interior Designers, Washington D.C.; the “Preservation Action Leadership Award” from the CT Historical Commission, and the “Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award” from the NYC Landmarks Conservancy Commission. In 2016, the CT Trust for Historic Preservation established “The Mimi Findlay Award for Young Preservationists” honoring Ms. Findlay’s lifetime achievements in the field of preservation.
